Wasted

Wasted is the message Grand Theft Auto shows when the player dies, and the meme that puts it on real-life fails. Since GTA IV the screen slows down, turns grey and shows the word in red; online, that look became a punchline for any fall, crash or embarrassing moment.

Origin. The word has been on the death screen since the first Grand Theft Auto, released on 28 November 1997. GTA IV (2008) and GTA V added slow motion and a washed-out frame. As a meme it took off in 2014: the r/WastedGifs subreddit opened on 8 January 2014, and YouTube compilations of "Wasted in real life" passed 200,000 views within months.

How people use it. A fail clip slows down, loses its color and ends with the word over the scene. In Russian the meme lives on as «Потрачено».

Example. A skateboarder misses a rail and freezes in grey as the word appears.

We do not copy the game screen: our own stamp memes use our characters, colors and type.
